How does a place come to look like itself? Vision models learn to see Swiss landscapes the way a long-time resident might, learning across the whole country which arrangements of buildings, land and vegetation belong together and where one character gives way to another. What the models see is then compared with what people say on the walks, where their attention settles, how the ground was surveyed and what is proposed for it. Where these readings agree, the qualities of Baukultur, and the sense of place they carry, can be recognised and followed as places change.
